Allan Riley Holmes, Jr. grew up in Charleston, South Carolina, where he attended Charleston Day School for elementary school and Porter Gaud School for high school. Riley earned his undergraduate degree from Clemson University, followed by his juris doctorate from the University of South Carolina School of Law. While at USC Law, Riley was on the South Carolina Law Review, the legislative council of the Student Bar Association, served as vice-president of the Palmetto Law Society, and was a member of Phi Delta Phi International Legal Fraternity.
After law school, Riley began practicing law at Gibbs & Holmes, the firm founded by his father and Coming Ball Gibbs. He focuses his practice primarily on labor and employment law, representing both plaintiffs and defendants in state and federal litigation. He is a member of the American Bar Association, the South Carolina Bar Association (Employment and Labor Law section as well as Trial and Appellate Advocacy section), and the Charleston County Bar Association. Riley is admitted to practice in South Carolina State Court as well as the United States District Court for the District of South Carolina.
Riley is attuned to the expense and unproductive activity that results from unnecessary litigation. Where possible, he seeks to avoid litigation and reach acceptable resolutions of controversies. However, when litigation is required, Riley is prepared to litigate to obtain successful results from the court. Riley is experienced with restrictive covenants in the employment context, all types of employment discrimination cases, employment contracts and handbooks, arbitration and mediation.
Riley is a member of the Carolina Yacht Club, the Huguenot Society of South Carolina, and the Society of Colonial Wars, among other organizations. When he is not with his wife and daughter, Riley likes to spend his free time playing music, hiking in western North Carolina, or on the water.
